At NOVA Automation, the Sales team is a critical link in ensuring the seamless execution of automation projects from concept to completion. Steve Laudwig, the Technical Sales Manager, plays a pivotal role in this process. With over four decades of experience in the industry and more than a decade at NOVA, Steve brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his role, helping clients develop automation solutions that fit their unique needs.
The Role of a Technical Sales Manager
Steve’s job is multifaceted, bridging the gap between NOVA’s internal sales channels and external clients. The process begins when NOVA’s sales team identifies potential automation projects within the primary and secondary packaging processes. These projects are then referred to Steve and his team in the Technical Sales department, where the real work begins.
Magnification
The way Steve describes his role is fascinating and he explains it in terms of magnification. The sales team provides a “1X view,” gathering a basic outline of the project. This is where Steve’s team steps in, working with the client to zoom in and take a much closer look at the project’s specific needs, this is the “10X magnification.” This stage involves identifying key project goals, such as rate, package types, area classifications, allergen requirements, footprint, and more.
As Steve explains, it’s during this phase that they work in collaboration with the end user to fine-tune the project details. Their goal is to develop a clear specification that meets the needs of various departments: sales, production, and finance. From there, the project moves to the “100X view,” which is when they develop detailed drawings and a bill of materials that can be used to present a formal bid.
Flexibility
While the process may sound straightforward, it’s important to note that every project is unique and requires adaptive solutions. Steve’s ability to handle these complexities is what makes him an invaluable part of the team. By working closely with the client, he helps create a solution that not only meets the project’s needs but also ensures a return on investment (ROI) that aligns with the client’s financial goals.
Teamwork and Communication
As the technical sales process unfolds, communication is key. Steve emphasizes the importance of keeping the client updated and ensuring that the flow of information between NOVA and all involved parties remains smooth. “Our sales team is a critical part of the communication process,” he notes. With the sales team maintaining open lines with the end user, everyone involved stays informed on the status of the project, from early discussions to final specifications.
The Hand-Off to Project Management
Once a project is officially secured, the process is just getting started. The Technical Sales team ensures a seamless transition to NOVA’s Project Management department. Steve’s role is to create a file portfolio that allows the project management team to pick up where the sales team left off and begin the manufacturing phase with all the information they need. This continuity is essential for keeping projects on track and ensuring timely delivery.

Experience
Steve’s career in the industry spans an impressive 40 years, and he has been with NOVA Automation since 2010. Throughout his career, Steve has been a part of many exceptional teams, but it’s the team at NOVA that stands out. “I really enjoy the team we have assembled at NOVA,” he shares. “Leadership has done a great job of establishing a common goal and vision between all departments.” This shared vision is what makes NOVA such a special place to work, as everyone understands that the company’s success is directly tied to the success of their customers.
The collaborative culture at NOVA is something Steve truly values. “Our success and growth are based on that of our customers,” he says. This customer-centric approach is what drives Steve and the team every day, knowing that their efforts directly contribute to the mutual success of both NOVA and its clients.
The Rewarding Job
Steve’s passion for his work is clear. The joy he finds in collaborating with clients and seeing projects come to life is what drives him to continue in his role year after year. By providing tailored automation solutions, Steve ensures that clients are not only satisfied with the end product but also see tangible benefits in terms of efficiency and ROI.
The most rewarding aspect of his role? The relationships built along the way. “It is so enjoyable to come to work each day knowing we share that common vision for the mutual success of both Nova and our customers.” This belief in the power of teamwork, communication, and customer satisfaction is at the heart of everything NOVA Automation does, and Steve Laudwig plays a central role in making that vision a reality.
